Briarcreek Farmstead is in a rural corner of southwestern Missouri, located on 25 acres of pasture and woods, bisected by a small creek framed by our infamous briars, or rosa blanda, the “Prairie Rose” of the midwest..

In the beginning, our principle objective was to breed the best of the best, the rarest of the rare. From those lofty dreams and goals our primary mission was born: The preservation of the genetic resources within each category of animal we have on our farmstead. Secondary to that goal is the utilization of each and every animal to his or her inherent purpose. We consider ourselves farmers as well as genetic preservationists that are in this for the genetic diversity of this planet we all call home. And, last but not least, our use of the term, farmstead, was a deliberate choice, as we hope to produce goods solely from our own herbs, plants and animals that we raise on our farm.

We breed our alpacas for inherent superiority. Our start with alpacas began with a visit to Alpacas at Windy Hill in Somis, California, where we bought our first suri alpaca, beautiful HCLA Pebbles, who was a Supreme Champion Suri at just 10 months old and became Canadian National alpaca Futurity Supreme Champion Suri 2005. At purchase, Pebbles had already been bred to the famous Inca’s Luster King and was due to deliver within four short weeks of our purchase. Talk about luck and timing. By the time Pebbles delivered her stunning pure white cria, Bella, we were hooked. Less than two months later, we added to our herd with still more remarkably beautiful suri alpacas from Old Trails Alpacas Company in Spokane, Washington. We now feel any and all of our suri alpacas would make fabulous breeding stock.

Our poultry is raised from chicks with an eye to the preservation of rare breeds and are for egg production only. Well, for egg-production and their beauty. We don’t eat our friends and everything on our farm is a friend. We are currently raising guinea fowl and chickens, and hope to expand to a few ducks soon.

Our goats, yet to be acquired, will be milk-production goats only and are to be kept for personal use as well as the production of cheese and soapmaking.

With the assistance of our wonderful livestock guardian dogs, Glory, our 10-year-old Great Pyrenees we acquired as a 14-month-old from Tip ‘N Chip’s of Barrington Hills, Illinois and Buddy, our 5-month-old Carpathian Shepherd from Dan Babutan , vice-president of The National Club of the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog Breeders, as well as our new 10-week-old Great Pyrenees littermates, Romy and Michelle, we tend our own herds and flocks.

Sturdy, no-climb fencing is now in place, thanks to local fencing expert, Matt Bales of Bales Welding, and we are in the process of extending those fences and adding more paddocks. We also have our first semi-portable shed in place thanks to Mr. Earl Bales, and it is a big, beautiful, extremely sturdy shed that we feel sure will give us many years of service.

Our interest in preservation extends beyond the enhancement of our alpaca herd to the restoration of the original gambrel-roofed barn on our property as well as to safeguarding the farming traditions of the past (see Farm Projects). An unexpected reward of this burgeoning interest in the preservation of genetic resources, workable skills and the utilization of symbiotic relationships in order to enhance the productivity of life on the farm, is that we have also regained something that was lost and discovered new respect and appreciation for the rhythms of life all around us.
